Ceremony For Casting Of The First Bridge Girder For the SGR Project
With the just completed assembly of casting moulds at Section 7 the first bridge girder is ready to be casted. Invited guests from the headquarters in Nairobi attended the event together with the staff at Section 7
The SGR Section 7 construction camp has the mandate of production of railway sleepers, dispatch of railway steel and production of the railway bridge girders. The girder is a horizontal steel reinforced beam weighing upto 140 Tonnes that will support the railway track on columns. Spanning 32 metres, the massive beam has to be cast inside a mould after which its dried and removed to storage awaiting transportation.
Today event marked the casting of the first girder at the site. The moulds which arrived from China, had to be assembled piece by piece after which the concrete is cast. Todays event was well attended by Chinese dignitaries from the headquarters office in Nairobi. Also guests from the other construction camps came to witness this historic activity.
The guests arrived and were welcomed by a small tour of the entire construction site. Led by the Site Manager they were shown how the construction was going on and later brought down to the launching site. Representatives from Kenya Railways had arrived and left earlier. The launching ceremony was marked by small speeches and lighting of fireworks as soon as concrete started being poured into the mould.
The casting of the girder involves a larger number of workforce. As the concrete was being poured inside, careful monitoring of the water content by the lab technicians was underway. Samples were constantly taken to ensure that the mix was right. Super vibrators attached to the mould sides continuously ran to ensure that the concrete set in well eliminating air bubbles. All this was under the watch of the invited guests who were impressed by the work.
After a brief photo shoot the guests left and the workers continued to cast the bridge girder, a process that takes upto 3 hours at most. Todays event marked the start of a process that will see the production of upto 900 Girders for the SGR project.
