Vision 2030 And The Standard Gauge Railway

The Mombasa-Malaba Standard Gauge Railway is on course. The line is 56% complete and is expected to be complete by March 2017 when the first speed train is expected to be in operation.

The total length of the distance between Nairobi - Mombasa is 609kms but the direct route via train will be 472kms. The Mombsa to Nairobi train will have an operating speed of 120km/h in 3hours hauling 209 double stack containers for freight and Ksh 850 per person for the passenger trains, thereby reducing the costs of going to Mombsa.

Kenya has chosen to give 56 locomotives to the freight handlers to ensure they do not lose business, while 46 shall be imported. This will affect the trucks but trucks could use the trains and pick goods from the dry ports and ferry to respective areas.

CONSTRUCTION: The SGR Project has created jobs for locals who are actively involved in the construction.
